Free people and slaves
In the Roman Empire, some people were free, but many were slaves. Slaves had no freedom. They were owned by their masters. Slaves worked on farms and in rich peoples' houses as servants. They had to do all the hard work. A few slaves were made to work as gladiators (professional fighters who fought against each other or animals). Ordinary Romans who were free worked as craftsmen, farmers or shopkeepers. [...]
